Growing up in Canada, I can’t really call myself a good judge of Mexican food, but I will mention a few places in Lincoln that I like. Before I get to that, let’s talk sauce…If you were to come over and open my fridge, you would find a whole door-shelf dedicated to hot sauce. My daughter and I tend to go through quite a bit. Some of the favorites are Cholula (original, chipotle and chili lime), Tabasco (various), Tapatio, Srircha, Frank’s Red Hot (buffalo) and my Korean GoChuJang. Depending on the meal, a little hot sauce can add a whole lot of flavor! We are pretty “hot sauce crazy”, she gave me a 5 flavor pack of Cholula for Christmas and she carries a mini bottle in her purse.
Regarding good Mexican in Lincoln; our family favorite is El Portal on Lincoln Boulevard just past 1st Street. They have a good selection of fresh and spicy choices and we always come away satisfied. I am a fan of their fish tacos and the boys like the super burritos.
Another great choice is Los Gallos in downtown Lincoln. The food is great but space is limited and it can be hard to get a seat during peak lunch or dinner hours. Don’t let that scare you away, this is more of an authentic Mexican experience and is next to Beermann Plaza and some neat downtown shops .
If you want an even more original taste and experience, try the Mexican Deli. This has been in Lincoln for years and always a favorite for those who love real Mexican food. You know it is good when most of the people eating there are speaking Spanish.
You can’t go wrong with any of these restaurants, they are all good in different ways. By the way, what kind of Hot Sauce do you prefer?
